Thrombolites, a variey of microbialite or 'living rock', Lake Clifton, Yalgorup National Park

The walk is quite short (600m), but there is another option to take a 5km loop walk along Lake Clifton. Start from the carpark, heading to the trail near the shelter with information on the area. About 100m down from the carpark, the trail forks, indicating the way to the thrombolites to the left by way of a boardwalk and the start of the loop.. Lake Clifton has the largest reef of living thrombolites in the southern hemisphere. Thrombolites are organosedimentary structures that are formed by microbes which trap and bind sediment to form so-called living rocks. These microbes are one of the earliest known life forms on Earth and they release oxygen which, over millions of years, helped.
